Graveyard Safety Test Scheduled for 13 January 2026

Wistow Parish Council wishes to notify the community as soon as possible that a comprehensive Graveyard Safety Test will be conducted on 13 January as part of ongoing efforts to ensure public safety, and maintain the structural integrity of memorial areas.

Published: 5 December 2025

This is a 5-year detailed risk assessment as advised by the Ministry of Justice. Burial authorities have a general duty under Local Authorities Cemetery Order (LACO) to maintain the burial grounds in good order

This inspection is undertaken to ensure that all memorials are safe and do not pose a risk to visitors or maintenance staff. Each memorial will be carefully checked to assess its stability.

If any memorial is found to be unsafe, it will be made temporarily safe, and the Council will contact the registered grave owner (where possible) to discuss any necessary repairs.

We kindly ask all visitors to take care while work is being carried out and to follow any safety signage or guidance from staff on site.

The graveyard will remain partially accessible during the inspection, though certain areas may be temporarily restricted to allow staff to work efficiently and safely. Visitors are asked to follow posted signage and any instructions provided by on-site personnel.
